Kadokawa executive Toshiyuki Yoshihara and manager Kyoji Maniwa have also been arrested in connection with the scandal.<\/p>\n<p>Kadokawa, who has been chairman at the corporation since 2019, was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of offering somewhere around 69 million yen (approximately $481,000, or \u00a3417,000) in bribes to Haruyuki Takahashi, a former executive of the Tokyo Olympic organising committee. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-62579153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Takahashi was already arrested<\/a> back in August\u2014before being &#8216;rearrested&#8217; last week\u2014on suspicion of receiving about $380,000, or \u00a3315,000, in &#8216;thank you payments&#8217; \u00a0from Aoki, a high street suit retailer.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors think Tsuguhiko Kadokawa made the payments to Takahashi for the advantage Kadokawa Corp enjoyed in its quest to become an official sponsor of the Tokyo Olympics. The company was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidesport.in\/tokyo-2020-welcomes-kadokawa-corporation-as-official-supporter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">granted official sponsor status<\/a> in April 2019, becoming the official publisher of the Tokyo Games&#8217; guidebooks and records.<\/p>\n<p>The scandal cast a pall over the 2020 games\u2014which were already the subject of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/sports\/sporting-scene\/tokyos-olympics-have-become-the-anger-games\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major controversy<\/a>\u2014and negatively impacted the country&#8217;s bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics in Sapporo.
