The outage has also impacted ATMs and Interac machines, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8975789\/rogers-outage-today-phone-internet-interac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global News<\/a> report, and some customers have also reported difficulty accessing 911 services.<\/p>\n<p>Services went offline early on July 8, although Rogers didn&#8217;t acknowledge the issue until around 9 am ET, right about the time I started trying to figure out why my internet wasn&#8217;t working. Unfortunately, the cause of the problem still has not been revealed: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rogers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rogers website<\/a> says only that it is &#8220;experiencing a network outage and are working to restore services as quickly as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bell and Telus, the other major telecom companies in Canada, have both said that their services are not impacted by the Rogers outage. Downdetector.ca, however, currently shows large spikes in outage complaints for both (<a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.ca\/status\/bell-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.ca\/status\/telus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Telus<\/a>), and my own Bell mobile service, which I initially used in an attempt to contact Rogers support\u2014which is also offline\u2014and then as a Wifi hotspot, has also been unusually slow and inconsistent.<\/p>\n<p>It may or may not be a cause for heightened concern (although I can&#8217;t say it&#8217;s lowered my own personal stress level) but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cse-cst.gc.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Communications Security Establishment<\/a>, Canada&#8217;s national cybersecurity agency, confirmed that it has been in contact with Rogers and &#8220;offered assistance,&#8221; should it be needed.<\/p>\n<p>Some Rogers customers are doing their best to handle the outage with good humor:<\/p>\n<div class=\"see-more see-more--clipped\">\n<p>the one guy at Rogers working on it like pic.twitter.com\/rjDkjS5WoR<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jamespmcleod\/status\/1545461185650335744\">July 8, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"see-more__filter display-see-more\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"see-more__button-container display-see-more\"><span class=\"see-more__button\">See more<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But there&#8217;s considerable anger, too. Canada&#8217;s telecommunications market is tightly regulated, and meaningful competition is <a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/telecom\/tombstone-on-the-grave-of-telecom-competition-crtcs-latest-ruling-spells-dark-period-for-smaller-operators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">non-existent<\/a>. Smaller mobile carriers, like Fido, Chatr, and Koodo, are owned by the big companies; there are other internet providers in the country but they service relatively tiny swaths of the population.
