Over the last month, a new kind of roleplaying trend has overtaken the platform. It&#8217;s called &#8220;dabloons&#8221;, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/dabloons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hashtag has over 730 million views<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>TikToker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@workbysweezy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweezy<\/a> claims the credit for starting it, having posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/i.kym-cdn.com\/photos\/images\/original\/002\/482\/847\/cd9.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slideshow<\/a> that offers the hungry viewer a hamburger and ends with the punchline that it&#8217;ll cost you &#8220;4 dabloons&#8221;, as demanded by a cat holding up four claws. (An image that had previously become a meme on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/COA6MnYJloj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a>.) Others continued the gag with slideshows and videos offering bowls of fresh stew, soup, or entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@_catsarethebest_0\/video\/7168782689351273771\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RPG shopping experiences<\/a>, while yet others featured cats and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@themajornerd\/video\/7168878794206432554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other characters<\/a>, but mostly cats, who handed out the imaginary currency instead.<\/p>\n<p>Soon players were keeping track of their wealth and inventory in the Notes app, on paper character sheets, or making entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lightningmcqueenplacemat\/video\/7168677120032525614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dabloon accountancy spreadsheets<\/a>. And where there&#8217;s wealth, there&#8217;s crime.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@dxblxxnrxbber\/video\/7168772401180855557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">muggers who demand the viewers&#8217; dabloons<\/a>, self-declared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@paytontroy_\/video\/7168698943612701998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dabloon launderers<\/a>, and counterfeiters whose too-good-to-be-true offers are revealed to be fake at the videos&#8217; end. Apparently there are dabloon assassins out there as well? An entire economy complete with its own black market has sprung up, as documented by this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@dabloonshq\/video\/7168685931841490219\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warning of the inflation that will surely follow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re baffled by all this you&#8217;re not alone. A substantial number of videos on the hashtag come from people who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@thisisagoodname5\/video\/716871408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bemused by the whole nonsensical situation<\/a>. But the internet&#8217;s always been a place where people will take anything &#8220;ha ha only serious&#8221;, where anything can accrue a bunch of made-up rules and become a game overnight.
